Rectangular iron lock

Rectangular iron locks have long been a standard for residential and commercial applications alike. Many consider these to be the best way to keep keys safe, since these locks can only be opened with a key or code made by the person holding the key. Many homes have this type of lock installed in their front door or bedroom door. Locks are most often made of solid metal, but some are available in combination with plastic or pry bar material. The combination variety is more popular because it can be opened with either a key or code.

Rectangular-shaped latches are among the most common types. They consist of three sections: the handle, the body and the latch itself. The handle is where you operate the lock, while the latch is where the security of the lock is provided. In older models, a spring attached to the top of the latch would lift and lower the entire lock to open it. Modern versions use a torsion spring that engages a series of gears on the inside of the body. This gear secures the entire lock into place when the latch is closed.

These kinds of locks can be found almost anywhere, including some government buildings. In commercial settings, such as bank vaults and credit unions, they are used as a standard form of security. Some homes even use iron latches as additional security measures. One reason why people prefer iron is because it has a higher strength rating than steel. This makes it very difficult for anyone to forcefully open them.
